In this class Chris asked us to design a bird house/box, with the brief ‘think outside of the box’ and clearly stated it does not have to be a bird box. For this brief I was teamed with Amber and Sydney.

Following Chris giving the brief, we came together as a group of three to brainstorm ideas. I found the group dynamic to work effectively in terms of gathering different ideas, but felt it was easy to get distracted and off topic. This can effect the flow of ideas and in future I would try to stay focused and on the brief at hand rather than get distracted.
The idea I decided to focus on was the idea of a horror movie for children. The bird box brief reminded me of the horror film bird box on Netflix (Netflix, 2018) and this then developed to include the idea of using characters such as big bird and the bird from chicken run.
From the development of this idea, I decided I would like to create some movie posters for the concept.

To create this, I obtained images of big bird and the chicken from chicken run and made them transparent on Photoshop, using skills learned from year 1. I then added them to an image of a spooky house and adjusted the opacity and contrast to make the images of the chickens blend with the image of the house. I then added the text with the movie name ‘bird house’ with the tagline ‘you’re not in sesame street anymore’ in reference to big bird. I also added when the movie will be shown in cinemas. To improve on this I could have added more detail to give the audience an idea on storyline and given the age restriction for viewing.

This poster is for an event which is showing a viewing of the movie. This is for use closer to release, showing in the increase of information given to the audience. I edited the image of big bird to appear more creepy and added obviously fake blood to the image. I tried to make the blood look less realistic as the target audience is children and I did not want the image to appear too scary.
Reflection:
Initially during the ideas process and deciding on how we’d like to interpret the subject, we got easily distracted and Chris had to guide us on how to best approach the task. In future, it would be beneficial, especially for time management for us to stay on topic and be more decisive on the subject of our task. When we came together as a class to review each others’ work, it became apparent that we were one of the only groups to pick different subject matters and split off for the task. In future it might be beneficial to work as a team to do the work because this will allow us to get each other’s input throughout the task.
