1. Proposal: Major Project

Initial ideas

My initial concept when submitting the quiz choosing our major project was “An Exploration of How Design Can be Made More Accessible for Those with Neurological Disabilities, Including How AI Can be Used as a Tool for Accessibility.”. This is due to my interest in how graphic design can be improved to make things more accessible to those with health issues. Following discussion around ethics approval and time limitations, I decided to focus on one health condition; ADHD. I chose ADHD because as someone who has been recently diagnosed, I can input some of my personal experience without necessarily needing ethics approval.

Proposal

For my project I would like to explore the neurological condition Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in detail and explain the condition with simple, easy to understand multimedia assets for those with ADHD and families of those with ADHD, with the aim to educate on the condition.

To accomplish this I plan to use my graphic design skills that I acquired within my degree to create two websites; one for the families and friends, and one for those recently diagnosed. I will research the best design methods to accommodate those with ADHD (such as preferred colour or bionic reading) and use some of the concepts taught in first year for the families and friends (such as colour theory or typography).

I will create multimedia assets, such as animations, edited videos, and blog posts to further educate people on the condition and treatments available.

Summary

I chose this topic because as someone recently diagnosed with ADHD, I found it very difficult to determine if I was extroverted or if it was my ADHD and a tool like the above would have been beneficial at the time. When I told family my diagnosis I found it very difficult to explain exactly what ADHD is, due to my lack of attention and focus, which lead to less or the wrong type of support. When I was diagnosed I spent a lot of time on places like Reddit to see how others dealt with it, but found a lot of people experienced the same I did. By having something like this to educate people with ADHD and their families and friends, it will make getting/giving the right support easier after diagnosis, and allow people with ADHD to make informed decisions on their health and treatment.
